Time for a New Awning

30 Apr

With the purchase of our new van just a few weeks ago we had inadvertently set ourselves up with another problem.

I say ‘inadvertently’ but in reality that’s not quite true as it’s something we were expecting to do and that is; purchase a new awning for our now 23ft, van.

With our old van, an 18ft Elddis Gulfstream, we had two awnings, a porch and a full one, both of which were a little large for the van, but nonetheless we picked them up for a song off a family friend who were ‘trading up’, just as we entered the world of caravanning some three years ago.

The first was an NR Rio porch awning which we hardly used anyway as we found that it took just as long to erect as our full-awning, an Isabella; ‘so what’s the point’ we felt, ‘let’s just take that one every time.’ And so we did.

The decision to sell the porch awning on e-Bay was a straightforward one, given that we hardly used it. So we took it with us on our last caper down at WoodHall Spa so we could take some pictures it in situ. It actually fits our new van nicely despite it covering up half of the kitchen window as can be seen from the pic below. Nevertheless, on to eBay it went.

Our Isabella awning was a different kettle of fish. At the back of our minds we knew it wouldn’t fit our new van. But hey ho! Given that funds are lacking at present there’s no harm in giving it a try. So the other day we popped down to the storage facility where we keep our van and ran through the awning rail.

No where near. A good two feet clearance off the ground at either-end. Still at least we tried. On to eBay it has gone – the sale ends in a couple of days if your interested. Follow this link to see the listing on eBay.

After trawling the internet for a potential new awning we decided to take a drive our to a couple of dealers who we knew had showrooms with a selection of awnings on display.

At Wandahome, just off the M62/A1 intersection at Knottingley, we  found just what we were looking for at an acceptable price. A brand-new, full-size Pyramid Corsican awning in blue. The thing is huge, we can’t wait to test it out the next opportunity which will at a rally at Leyburn at the Spring Bank holidays.

Before the Summer though, we need to get a bedroom insert for reasons that will become apparent in later posts. However these are only about £20 so no worries there then.

I had an unfortunate incident with our awning; got up to go one morning, badly hungover and barely capable of speech, and managed to hitch up the caravan and tow it off. The awning was still on the side :(
